Great Lakes Map Challenge

Map info

Learning Mode shows place names on the map. Phones start with lakes and bays; use Show labels to study connecting waters, canals, cities, or all places. Tap a label to highlight its location and zoom in. Zoom or drag to look closer; Reset returns to the full map. There is no timer or scoring. Choose Classic when you are ready to find places without labels.

First-try answers start at 100 points. At 5 straight the combo becomes ×1.5; at 10, ×2; at 15, ×3. The milestone answer earns the new multiplier. A miss breaks the streak and resets the combo. Second tries earn 50 points, later tries and reveals zero. Correct answers advance automatically; points reset each round.

Choose Time me for a countdown and a fresh timed round. The clock runs continuously and stops at the last answer. Reveal makes it practice only. Personal bests for unassisted full rounds in Classic and Mastery stay saved in this browser. Online timed rounds are checked as you play; post your result to High scores only if you choose.

Mastery unlocks after a full-map finish: find the actual places on satellite imagery with no markers or colored outlines. Tap a lake or bay, a city, or a river or canal. Anywhere within 25 km of the feature counts. Brief feedback appears only after you guess. Classic and Mastery use the same combo rules and have separate high scores.

Practice history stays in this browser across visits. Clearing history leaves your current round in place; it does not remove a result you chose to post to High scores.

Satellite imagery: Esri World Imagery. Image dates and providers vary by area and zoom. Numbered features, river centerlines and city limits: © OpenStreetMap contributors, ODbL, September 2026. Outlines show municipal limits; they can include water. Animated highlights identify waterways; they do not show current or travel direction. In numbered modes, distance hints compare the marker anchors. Mastery accepts anywhere inside a water area or city boundary, plus taps within 25 km of its edge. Rivers and canals accept taps within 25 km of their mapped centerlines. The allowance stays the same at every zoom level. Numbers stay at their locations whenever there is room. Short pointers connect displaced buttons to the exact locations; tap a button once to answer. Sources.
